Jordan Zdanek

If you choose to stay up on the pass during Tailgate Alaska, you might not get to take a shower until the next time  you drive down into town.  Here Jordan shows the tech how we took showers in our RV:  take three parts cold water and mix one part boiling water into a bug/weed sprayer.  Get in the pictured plastic tub in the actual shower of the RV and spray away.  Shampoo and rinse…

Flow's Mike Basich

Rob Kingwill, Mike Basich & Shin Biyajima

Most days in AK you leave in the morning and don’t return till around 9:30ish.  Here Basich and his boys just returned around 9:40 under the Full Moon with his newest Go-Pro Creation, Look for his newest edit to drop soon.

If you need ice up at basecamp you either drive into town or hop on your sled, go up to the glacier and grab a chunk of Ice.  Break off a nugget and add to your Soda, Drink or what ever you need ice in.  And yes it’s clean, the ice is over 10,000 years old!

Stairway to Heaven

Stairway to Heaven

In AK you need to have $120 USD to have a Heli drop you off at one of the millions of peaks around Flows Tailgate Alaska Basecamp or you hop on a Snowmachine take it up about 4000 vertical feet then climb up another 500-1000 more and when I say climb I mean climb!  It’s literally a like you are climbing a step ladder up to a narrow scaffolding to grab a bag of money, you want it but you don’t want to die, man my hands are sweating just writing about it!  A Bitter Sweet…  but once atop the Peak you realize the near death experience was worth it!!  Sometimes…

Death Hole

Death Hole

Once at the top hidden dangers exist every place around you, you really need to be on your A-Game.  No effin around, Weather could come in, Avalanches could pop, dips could be Crevasses or example as we were walking to our drop in point one of our guys happened to step to the left of the trail and exposed a death hole.  “TIAK” = This Is Alaska, that’s the saying around those parts, kinda like the saying “Murphy’s Law” anything that can go wrong will and can.

Coming down the mountain from another long but amazing day to TGAK Basecamp… priceless

Flows Tailgate Alaska Jason Gretzinger

Smores anyone?

Nights are fun in AK and you pretty much stay up late and get hungry so to suppress your late night munchies you get really creative.  Here Jason Gretzinger makes himself a Smores Sandwich while Jordan coaches him, just as any kind hearted Merikan would do for his up to da north neighbor from Canada.

TAILGATE ALASKA 2012 pt1…

Flow Tailgate Alaska

Flow Tailgate Alaska Vessel

This was our Vessel for the next Three weeks, a 36 foot RV with two slide outs and yes that’s a trailer behind it filled with wood pallets.  Talk about sketchy drive, we had a 6-7 hour drive ahead of us with this big rig.

Flow Tailgate Alaska Vessel packed up

This is what the inside looked like after we picked up our generators, tents, product and supplies. Asking for it…

Grabbing some Fireworks

When passing thru Glenellen on the way to Flows Tailgate Alaska it is a MUST to stop and get fireworks from Jon.  Look for his set up behind the gas station, here ABA Heli Guide Badgr shows his stoke for his bag of goodies.  God Belss Merika!!

Upon arrival it was an empty lot just waiting for RV’s, Snowmachines and Happy People

Flow Basecamp Coming together

After a couple days Basecamp started to come together

Flow Team Riders tent

This was where most our Team Riders stayed, an Alaknak Hunting Tent

NXTZ Balaclava

Shin shows us the comforts of inside, yes it got cold but only when the fire went out… once a night, so dress warm.  I suggest sleeping in your NXTZ Balaclava   Look at how bundled up Nathalie Zenklusen and Atsushi Ishikawa are in their cots…

Cheers from Flow

Then it was time to GO SNOWBOARDING!  Look for the edit to drop soon!

Flow Campfire

When night came and the Beer Garden Shut Down we gathered around the Flow Campfire, usually the sun sets at 9:20 pm so it’s long days up in AK

Flow tent was THE spot to chill in

The inside of the Flow tent was THE spot to chill in.  In the mornings to grab a cup of FREE Ravens Brew Coffee, warm up, check e-mail, plan the day and meet up with other crews, discuss different zones and snow pack.  Pictured here:  Kevin Addy, Jason Gretzinger, Brooke, Bridget, Celia Miller, Sarka Pancochova, Kinger and Lago

And below is what we all Live for… Powder

Flow World Freeride Championships

The WFC qualifiers were yesterday, under blue bird skies, pleasant temps, solid spectatorship and higher than preferred avy danger to keep it exciting. The Flow team STACKED the line up – 8 or 9 in total.

Flow Snowboarding Team

Stand out moments:
-Max Zipser and Mikey B’s line selection
-Max’s poised and fluid second run
-Scotty Lago’s HUGE method off the biggest cornice. In fact, in his two runs, Scotty landed 3 air and made only 1 run. Impossible? Nope, I swear, he straight lined Bro Bowl
-Nathalie’s runs. Her first was smooth as hell. Her second, umm, it was the same as Basich’s!
-Sarka Pancachova going only 3 feet shorted off Scotty’s same cornice. Then landing, then getting her feet swept out by an avalanche then standing up, then disappearing, then getting back to her feet, then joining the group with a freakin smile. The crowd screamed when she waved her hands that she was ok.
-Celia Miller stepping outside her comfort zone, staying on her feet, and riding with composure
-Jordan Nield had one squeaky run & then one where he did a method and pointed it down the face
-Shin Biyajima from Japan The crowd cheering for Shin – he’s the “new” legend
-Micah dominating, all in the name of Aaron Robinson and always with the most sincere appreciation towards Flow. He threw a back three off a huge cliff and a huge straight air off a 60 footer into 8th place getting him into the finals tomorrow via heli.

The top 12 list and the top eight men advance to the finals.

Stay tuned…
