5 Ways To Stay In Snowboarding Shape

8/27/2015 12:34:07 PM

Mario Wanger mountain climbing for his #FlowRituals

Flow Snowboarding wants you to stay in shape this off-season so you will be ready for the hill this winter. We can all agree that it is easier to stay in shape in the winter… we can just go snowboarding. We are at our best on our snowboards when we maintain a steady workout, healthy(ish) diet and stay in shape, here are a few ways to stay in shape in the off-season.

1. Cardio:
Go mountain biking, climbing, hiking, kayaking, running, play soccer, stand up paddle, surf… enjoy the outdoors. Strengthen those leg and core muscles. Maintaining your mental and physical stamina will help your ability to breathe and function at high elevation. Keep up with an active lifestyle in the off-season and you primed and ready for the winter.

2. Yoga:
Yoga is widely used by top athletes of all ages and disciplines. By incorporating yoga into your daily training regimen, you will be more connected to your body and mind. Yoga increases flexibility as well as mental health. Yoga poses and stretches are one of the top ways to prevent injuries. It keeps you loose, strong, and flexible on and off the mountain. (Resist the urge to hit on your yoga class mates until after your sessions.)

3. Healthy Diet:
We are not denying the fact that most of us on the hill like to indulge in a beverage or several Apres Ski. But a healthy diet does cancel out the not so healthy choices we make, but we would like to think it can’t be bad for you to eat healthy in between those binges at the lodges and villages. Resist the gut bomb breakfast with a simple Acai bowl. Pack some water and a few power bars or some fruit in your jacket. Hold on getting the mountain chili burger and grab a salad for lunch. It will help replenish that much needed energy on the hill, along with save the cash in your wallet while visiting the resorts.

4. Cross-Training Board Sports:
Surfing, Skateboarding, Stand Up Paddleboarding, Wakeboarding and Snowboarding are each their own separate discipline, but all share core board sport fundamentals. Each of these sports help you increase balance, core strength, reaction time, all the while allowing you to lose yourself in the act of having fun. Even having an Indo Board at home would help with training. There is something about having a board under your feet that makes exercise a little bit more fun to do.

5. Go Snowboarding:
Of course the best way to stay in snowboarding shape is to keep snowboarding. Just because your local hill stopped spinning the lifts months ago, open up a map and broaden your horizons. A quick google search and some planning and you could find yourself chasing the winter to the southern hemisphere in the summer. Going after one of the glacial camps here in North America or Europe. For the park rats, maybe you’ll visit the indoor slopes and fridges in Europe. There are even dry slopes that can be found for the hard core jibbers. Your snowboarding season ends only if you let it.

Sarka Pancochova Keeping Up With Her Flow Rituals

8/4/2015 1:28:14 PM

Flow Snowboarding had a chance to catch up with Sarka Pancochova to see how her summer travels have been treating her. Sarka has been a busy lady this summer filled with taking home a medal in a European surf championship, teaching kids at Woodward East along and of course getting back to nature with some mountain and rock climbing.

How have your summer travels been going?

“I visited my family back in Czech. I also surfed in France for little bit, went to Woodward East. So yeah… I have been all over the place. But it has been super fun. Trying to stay outside as much as possible”

Tell us a little bit about the surf competition you were in over in France.

“The Czech and Slovakian Surf Championships. My friend Martin Cernik has been putting up this competition for few years now. Super low key and friendly vibe. I had great time. It is completely different from snowboard contests. I had over a 40 minute long heat and had to catch two waves that count. It seemed lot less stressful then two runs and I have to land one in a snowboard contest.”

How did the coaching session go with Celia Miller over at Woodward?

“We skated a lot, hung out with the kids and helped them learn some new tricks on trampolines. Pretty much the best week ever. I felt like a kid in the candy store. I haven’t skated in a long time, so it felt good to be back at it. Now I have been trying to go at least few times a week.”

What are your #FlowRituals? What types activities keep you active and fit during the summer?

“I love rock climbing, it’s been great for mental strengthening and it keeps me super fit. I just try to stay outdoors as much as possible. My #FlowRituals are biking, skating, surfing, hiking, camping and hanging out in hipster coffee shops with friends.”

Any other trips planned for the rest of this summer?

“I am gonna spend most of my summer in Colorado and do all the activities above and all day long”

What are your upcoming plans for this winter?

“Heading out to Europe and start working on some tricks. Ride Austria and Switzerland for the fall. Next year, I’m gonna get more into contests again. My knee feels 100% now and I wanna start winning again, and also continue (my film) Shark Tales with an epic trip to Japan.”

How is the film Shark Tales coming around?

Shark Tales has been taking most of my time lately. We are working on editing and the online release is suppose to happen mid November on redbull.com I have also planned out few premieres in Czech Republic and Colorado. The filming has been super successful and I can’t wait for it come out.”

A lot of news lately about the upcoming El Nino in the Pacific, and what it means as far as snowfall this winter… any predictions?

“Colorado’s summer has been super rainy so far, so I am hoping it will stay like this over the winter. It’s gonna be an epic year.”

What music have you been listening to lately?
“Asgeir, Florence and the Machine”
